The ‘Only Murders in the Building’ star hasn’t attended the event in years.
Fans gushed over a pH๏τo of Selena Gomez’s 2023 Met Gala look, but it wasn’t even real.
An edited image of the “Lose You to Love Me” singer, 30, posing for a snap on the red carpet outside the event went viral on Twitter earlier this week, with nearly 22 million people viewing the tweet. Unfortunately, the pH๏τo in question altered an old picture of Lily James’ Met Gala look from 2022 to include Gomez’s face.
“SELENA GOMEZ DID A SURPRISE APPEARANCE AT THE #MetGala WTF,” a fan wrote alongside two pH๏τoshopped images of the singer posing in a blue cutout fishnet ensemble.
The social media platform then added fact-checking context that stated, “Selena Gomez did not attend the 2023 Met Gala and has not attended the Met Gala since 2018. These are altered images of Lily James at the 2022 Met Gala.”
Gomez decided to skip this Met Gala and left New York City after her show, Only Murders in the Building, wrapped up filming its third season. Instead, she jetted off to Los Angeles where she was seen grabbing dinner in Hollywood with her 9-year-old sister, Gracie.
The last time she attended the Met Gala, Gomez donned an ethereal light pink Coach gown to the event. However, the singer ended up leaving the gala early due to a beauty disaster. Which she later told Glamour UK took a turn for the worst while she was sitting inside of the event.
“While I was getting ready for the Met Gala a few years ago, we put on a bit of tanning lotion and it looked beautiful – but as the night went on it kept getting darker and darker,” she divulged. “When I sat down, I saw a pH๏τo of myself, and it looked completely orange. And here I am at this prestigious event – my first thought was – ‘I have to get out of here!’”
Gomez poked fun at the situation by sharing a video of her leaving the event as she ran away in her Met Gala dress, writing, “Me when I saw my pictures from MET ,” in the caption.
It’s unclear whether or not Gomez’s beauty disaster stopped her from ever attending the Met Gala again, but it’s safe to say fans would love to see her out at fashion’s biggest night in the future!
