Excitement Builds as Chris Hemsworth’s Latest Film Aims to Rewrite Box Office History

  • Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming action film starring Chris Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell could potentially break Hemsworth’s personal box office record, working on a non-franchise film.
  • Hemsworth’s highest-grossing film domestically that isn’t tied to a big-name franchise is 12 Strong, which earned $45 million in the US. This collaboration could surpass that number.
  • At the worldwide box office, Hemsworth’s non-franchise films have never broken $100 million. This project presents an opportunity for him to finally achieve that milestone.

Chris Hemsworth will be starring in a Matthew Vaughn action film that could potentially break a personal box office record for the actor. Vaughn has recently revealed in an interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast that he has been producing a “very, very, very special” movie starring Chris Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell. Although the director didn’t give away any more details about it, he claimed this film could have an impact on the genre like Kick-Ass had back in its time.

Mathew Vaughn has produced iconic action films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch , in addition to directing films such as Kick-Ass and the Kingsman trilogy.

Chris Hemsworth is known for his work within the action genre and, more specifically, big action franchises. His most noticeable role is Thor in the MCU, but he has also starred in the Star Trek, Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Snow White, and Vacation franchises. Additionally, his most exciting upcoming project is his role as Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This exciting collaboration with Vaughn could not only mean a great chance to add a great and disruptive action film to his filmography, but it could also break a box office record while working on a non-franchise film.

Matthew Vaughn’s New Action Movie Can Finally Break A Box Office Record For Chris Hemsworth

Considering the hype for Mathew Vaughn’s new action film, if this title is released theatrically, it could become a record for Chris Hemsworth, whose box office numbers are already quite amazing. Hemsworth’s box office history is impressive, with a domestic box office average of $200 million per film (via The Numbers) and four of his MCU movies grossing over $400 million domestically. However, those higher numbers just below the MCU titles are tied to Hemworth’s other franchise films like Star Trek, The Huntsman movies, Ghostbusters, and others. Vaughn’s new project could break his 2018 box office record working in a non-franchise film.

12 Strong is Chris Hemsworth’s highest-grossing film domestically that isn’t tied to a big-name franchise. The film grossed $45 million in the U.S. and reached $71 million worldwide, which isn’t much in comparison with his other films. The Cabin In The Woods and Red Dawn, two of his other non-franchise films, are close to that number with $44 million and $42 million, respectively, but are still nothing compared to other Chris Hemsworth films.

A Non-Franchise Chris Hemsworth Movie Has Never Broken Over $100m Worldwide

Chris Hemsworth As James Hunt Sitting On His Car In Rush

In addition to breaking a domestic box office record, this collaboration with Matthew Vaughn could mean another milestone for Hemsworth. Although 12 Strong, The Cabin in the Woods, and Red Dawn are Hemsworth’s most successful non-franchise movies at a domestic level, they didn’t do so well worldwide. Rush, Ron Howard’s 2013 film about James Hunt and Niki Lauda, was Hemsworth’s closest non-franchise film to reach the $100 million box office, grossing $98 million. This new project seems like the perfect chance for Chris Hemsworth to finally surpass that number outside a big franchise blockbuster.
