A TV producer has revealed that Selena Gomez’s character in Wizards Of Waverly Place Alex Russo was supposed to be in a gay relationship with her friend Stevie, who was played by Hayley Kiyoko
Selena Gomez’s character on Wizards Of Waverly Place was supposed to be in a gay relationship, according to executive producer Peter Murrieta.
Speaking on the Wizards Of Waverly Pod show with co-hosts Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise, Peter explained that he always imagined Alex Russo, Selena Gomez’s character, to be in a gay relationship with her friend Stevie, who was played by Hayley Kiyoko.
However, due to the conservative nature of Disney channel at the time the show was airing, they weren’t able to show the same-sex relationship.
Peter said: “I wished we could have played more with what was quite obvious to a lot of us.”
“We weren’t able to at that time, but it was pretty clear to all of us what that relationship was.”

He added: “Disney Channel has had [LGBTQ] characters, and they did it. At that time it wasn’t a thing. But we got as close as we could… I mean, it was pretty close.
“That would have been great.”
The characters were never in a romantic relationship on the show but fans still shipped the pair and referred to them online as ‘Stalex.’
Hayley later came out as gay, although it wasn’t during her appearance on the show.

Peter later explained that he hoped the show would have ended after its fourth season, with Selena and Gregg Sulkin’s characters being involved..
“I was hoping the fourth season would be about the building of [Alex] and [Sulkin’s character] Mason’s relationship.”
He said that they would now “be good for each other and fix each other” after they had matured.

He said that he thought that the series should have still ended with a contest that Selena won but she would give up her powers to be with Mason.
He said that this vision for the series ending would have been for Harper (Rachel Dratch) to be reading the story to her children as she said goodnight.
